Asia, Chicks and the Future

Asia

Has anyone seen the class wiki of Social Media and PR across Asia? It’s awesome, I used it today to find out some figures on internet and mobile penetration rate in Malaysia, India and Philippines.

As i’m a little lazy to register to comment on Read Write Web, I’m gonna trackback to them to promote our wiki. They’ve initiated OpenWeb Asia  to try to reach out to Asian Tech. Since one of the major obstacles was language and culture, our wiki gives a good inside into the general media landscape and the social media landscape, which enables you to build bridges with Asia.

There’s also customizable ads at target groups and now a network is forming to group up various groups, races, etc online behavioral pattern. Wonder if people at People Online (No pun intended) are interested in our wiki?

So what’re you’ll waiting for, ppl who wanna connect with Asia. We hear you, we want you to connect, come talk to us. It’s a social era after all! Best of all, the wiki is written by Asians and its in ENGLISH! (Trust e, i know how frustrating it is to come across a language you cant read and you know the content you need is in there.)

In addition, if our wiki hasn’t covered some stuff you’re curious about, take a look at my blog roll to ask some of our marketing and corporate communications experts on the markets here… There, I’ve helped everyone out with a simple post! Include us in your RSS Feeds site! Lol…

Chicks

Remember my post on gender differences and social net working sites? Then there was a discussion on my class working wiki thread… I still stick by my stand that there is a difference in behavior, and it is important.

Well, here’s a movie that really mashed a great integrated channel campaign. From traditional to social, its one hell of a money churning machine. I feel embarrassed holding the Coke light now (Not a male chauvinist) with Sarah’s legs dangling from it… So chicks are different with this movie as an example, check out the facebook apps and advertising targeted at them!

The Future

Lastly, the future of social media and PR. I never really thought of it.

I guess this has been discussed quite often but everyone’s talking has drawn me back to what I’ve learnt before…… Here’re some interesting reads…

Michael believes in going back to basics:

We have started with the technology, and forgotten the very things which make us effective communicators–starting with the desired outcome and then targeting audiences who are able to help us reach our goal. Of course the way we go about this today is by making sure we have something of interest and value to the target audience…but at the end of the day, the purposive nature of our discipline remains unchanged.

Simon think we should be more authentic:

Instead of focusing our effort on converting people in roles that are traditionally siloed, should we – as PR consultants – instead be tasked with identifying an organisation’s natural communicators and empowering them (or helping their employer empower them) to speak authentically on their employer’s behalf.

Jenifer Mattern feels that PR should be self regulatory:

I don’t think we’re at a point where we need industry regulation – and quite frankly, I wouldn’t trust any existing organization to handle it, as I don’t think there’s one that truly understands the broader concept of PR while being able to stay effectively on top of all of the new changes constantly brought on by technology.

How are these 3 connected to the future? The future of social media and PR is that social media is just a medium, a powerful medium but just another medium. I guess at the end of the day if we follow Simon and be authentic in our message, we wouldn’t need regulations because its the truth. With that, we can once again not be caught up with the Social Media Hype. like Michael said, we can take a step back and focus on truly being the voice of the company.

Thanks! Awesome wiki! I’ve been using it for some stuff I’m doing at Yahoo!

Oh, just a note, those who wanna trackback from OpenWeb Asia, the link they provided in the comments for trackback is buggy, so use the one that I’ve used and it should work out fine

I agree with Michael. As usual, i am half caught between loving technology and all the social media stuff but at the same time, strongly believe that we must not forget about the basic of communciations. Wrote a post some long time back – http://priscillatan.com/2007/09/01/pr-back-to-basics/
