Social Media and the Racial Fabric

Right, so this post was inspired by Natalie’s video as shown below.

While I appreciate Natalie’s humour ( Yeah, U go gal, i’m one of them with small eyes too) I wonder if social media has torn or brought the fabric of racism further or closer…. I mean just look at how harsh those comments are. Are Gen Y’s samrt enough to know how dumb those comments actually make that idiot look or does it stir a darker side in us….

I mean web 2.0 has brought us closer together like never b4, yet there’re still micro groups of racial communities together within a social networking site. Yet, there’re also blogs who’re trying to understand other cultures.

I’m not thinking of intercultural behaviors of individualism and collectivism.. I don’t care for the power distance index because China is a great example of breaking its own cultural barrier online…. I’m wondering on a broader and a more personal level.

Which begets the question, has social media torn the racism fabric or has it stiched us a little tigheter together so we understand each other’s culture better. What do u think?

Disclaimer: This post is not intended to target any particular racial or ethnic group. Rather its purpose is used to facilitate discussion regaring the use of social media and its impact on racial tolerance and understanding.
