I’m sure many of you have already heard, Barack Obama will be the 44th president of the United States. Many have claimed his arrival to the white house heralds a new era of hope, others believe a significant change is about to occur.
You can see on the news that millions around the world have predicted and are celebrating his victory, McCain never really stood a chance… Why? 1 word, reputation.
You see, the problem with McCain was this. All you had to do was to lump the words, Bush, Republicans failed policies and McCain. Anything that McCain can say is discredited because of Hurricane (Everything that he touches ends in disaster) Bush.
Obama, on the other hand, had a really good PR campaign to enhance his reputation. From family, racial and social ties, he’s managed to convince the people he understands where they are at now and that a change is needed.
Channel News Asia asked Singaporeans if they cared if Obama won… Many said yes… but not many knew what this ‘change Obama would bring about. The STI also went up with news that Obama won…. Young people start caring about voting when politics was never really part of their interest. They’re celebrating too! All these reactions, based on reputation….
But did you know,he’s going against FTA to increase production in US and to rely less on exports!! And you’re all happy the biggest importer is restricting FTA?
Don’t get all defensive, my point is this. The impression that you give people, can really enhance your reputation. That reputation you possess can have a profound impact on yourself. It can win you a presidential post. It can enhance your profits. It can tear you apart. It can make you a bankrupt company.
Why were the young celebrating? You should really take a look at the social media usage of Obama during his campaign. Even if it was a ghost writer on his twitter, or having an iPhone app b4 McCain, he understood the need to reach out to the young in a way they knew how to be communicated, to build his reputation through interactivity with them.
My conclusion is this. Communications is the way build your reputation. To those who said PR is useless, just look at Obama to see how his reputation has propelled him to the presidential seat. To those who think social media is just a bubble, see the dancing kids in front of the white house who probably wouldn’t have bothered about Bush’s 2nd term.
Now chew on that and in the meantime, let’s celebrate Obama’s win! Because I’m one of those who was won over by his endearing reputation.
If Tupac were alive, he’ll be up on the stands with Obama. But I know he’s smiling up there knowing that the much needed change is about to occur….
